Charlew’s Tap House is one of the newest restaurants in Shasta County, kind of. Kathy and Charlew Byerly moved to Shasta County over twenty years ago to raise their family and live the North State lifestyle. They soon opened two restaurants and continued the long tradition started by Charlew’s grandmother, Mary. Mary’s Pizza Shack has been a family favorite in California since 1959 and still operates restaurants in the Bay Area.
This local couple has a lifetime of restaurant experience and has decided to break out on their own.

The Tap House is a family buisiness.
Charles “Charlew” Byerly grew up in Sonoma, California making pizzas and managing his grandmother’s family restaurants along with other family members. Before moving to Shasta County, Charlew and Kathy owned and operated a Mary’s Pizza Shack in Novato, California. Their desire for a more rural lifestyle brought them to the North State, and we are lucky to have enjoyed Charlew’s family’s recipes for almost twenty years now. The new restaurant still serves many of the recipes that are Mary’s Pizza Shack staples, and the menu has additional items that make it more Shasta County.
Challenging times inspired change.
The pandemic followed by operating cost increases highlighted some things that could be improved. A lot is in line with what the restaurant industry is already doing, but with higher attention to service at the table. Charlew’s still has people to serve the food and help out with anything a guest might need during their meal. That hasn’t changed. The ordering process is streamlined and there is a self-serve beer wall.
In January, 2022 Charlew and Kathy switched both Shasta County Mary’s Pizza Shack locations over to the new Charlew’s concept.
Menus are available online and in-house, both printed or on your device via QR codes. Guest associates will bring everything out to you after you have ordered at the counter.

The beer wall has eighteen choices that are available for purchase by the ounce. They still serve a selection of beers the traditional way too. When you are in, don’t be shy about asking for a tour of the wall, they are happy to show us how to use it. Wine and soft drinks are also available. The beer selection is updated frequently.
The menu has a nice list of pizza toppings for their hand-tossed style of pizza. The menu has a list of combinations, but you are free to create your favorite.
The kitchen works with fresh ingredients to build plates of pasta, salmon, steaks, and sandwiches. Locally sourced steaks are from R&R Quality Meats.
